  3. mad dog Says:

i like Ernst and Maurice. might choose these for my son in the future (if i would have one)!

  4. licheong Says:

  5. Martin@Buffalo Says:

hehe…and you may discover that my list is the first names of music theorists ^__^

From our traditional Chinese thought, name carries a kind of hope from parents to the child.

  6. licheong Says:

    o yes
I only know Alan Forte and Heinrich Schenker
    Wai-Ling and Martin ….
    =_=

  7. Mouse Says:

Yes, Martin will one day turn into the list, though may be can’t stand on a par with, say, Olivier. Though I can’t even say you cannot reach a state like Heinrich. ;-)

Of course I “love” Gustav. And may be in these days I’d vote for Francis as well; but are you in the trouble of taking names for your next generation? (Well, in this generation, carni counts too!)

  8. licheong Says:

sorry, what’s the meaning of “carni”?
Well, how about if I am choosing a name for myself…? :-P

  9. Says:

  10. licheong Says:

Gustav Mahler
    希望似 Richter, 而不是 Bulow…

    假如用 Francis 做名, 都幾好
    Francis Li -> 煩死你

  11. Mouse Says:

Hans: Remember the great Meistersinger Hans Sachs? Well he’s the one who is brave, musical AND lovable. A humane Wagnerian hero.

    Hans is good.

  12. Lette Says:

Han in dictionary means 漢. Will the name “Hans” seem too tranditional, as on people’s first impression, when introducting yourself to foreigners? I am not sure, just to raise this issue for discussion.

So far I think Cheong is quite good. In my opinion, don’t attempt to call yourself a new name if you are not sure you like it or not, as it can be a disaster if you dun like it later on.

  13. licheong Says:

    Thanks for all opinions.
Checked with websites, Hans is a short form of Johannes in Germany, just like Bill can be a short form of William. It is not directly related to 漢, though it may probably give such an impression.

This article give an interesting of the origin of names.

Yes you are right that it would be quite disastrous for choosing a name that you don’t like… better stay with my own chinese name, though too many people in china has the same name as me…

    Cheong LEE

  15. Kiu Says:

It’s not working! I attempted to be Hilary at the beginning of last year. Turn out, my teacher doesn’t like it (my teacher!) and keep calling me Kiu Tung. There are tons of connection inbetween people, especially the music world is so small. So simply it’s just impossible for me to have a ‘new name’.. now it’s too funny that some people call me Kiu Tung while some call me Hilary (especially those cantonese speaking people). and I always confuse people.
