LI, Cheong was born in Macau and grew up in Hong Kong. He studied at the Chinese University, gaining a first-honour degree in music and his Master degree in Composition, under the supervision of Prof Victor Chan. Currently he is studying for a PhD at the University of York, under the supervision of Prof Roger Marsh and Dr Thomas Simaku.

Recent performances of his music included Ivit, Ivit (2012) for the 24, a progressive vocal group in York; Responses (2011) for dizi (chinese flute) duets with ensemble commissioned by Hong Kong Arts Festival and Drumming Ridgepremiered by Ricky Yeung (dizi) and Fulcum Point New Music Project at Chicago (2010). His past compositions and arrangements has been performed by Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, King’s Harmonica Quintet, Windpipe Chinese Ensemble and various ensembles.

Li is interested in exploring improvisation in composition. His piece Schönbop (2011) for the Threads Orchestra involved improvisation from musicians with both jazz and classical background. He is also interested in interaction of acoustic instruments and live electronics. His piece Impromptu II (2011) for alto flute and live electronics, premiered in the Soundscape Festival at Maccagno, allows freedom within a given structure and interactive live electronics. His sound installation Playground (2011) presented in Chimera Concert uses webcam to trace body movement to trigger sounds moving in a space.

Li is also interested in music and dance theatre. His musical Alice (2010) was performed by students of the Ying Wah Girls’ School in Hong Kong. He has also collaborated with dancers from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds for two short dance theatres, When the Structure Softens (2009) and a Game for the John Cage Song Books project (2012). He has also involved as an erhu (chinese fiddle) player, a sound designer and a conductor in some student productions in York. He has also worked as a teacher in computer music and general music courses for secondary schools and Institute of Vocational Education in Hong Kong.

李昌生於澳門,在香港長大,畢業於香港中文大學音樂系,隨陳偉光教授學習作曲,並於2004年獲得音樂碩士學位。畢業後從事作曲、編曲及教學的工作,曾任教中學會考音樂課程,以及在IVE任教電腦音樂。現於英國約克大學繼續進修博士課程,師隨Prof Roger Marsh 及 Dr Thomas Simaku。最近的作品有由清唱組合The 24演出的《揭諦、揭諦》 (2012);由陳子旭、陳子晉在香港藝術節演出的笛子二重奏《對歌》(2011) ;由楊偉傑(笛子)及美國 Fulcrum Point New Music Project(弦樂四重奏)在芝加哥首演的《打鼓嶺》(2010)等等。他過往的作品曾被香港管弦樂團、香港中樂團、英皇口琴五重奏、竹韻小集等演出。

李氏近期的作品主要在探索記譜和即興演奏之間的各種可能。為Threads Orchestra創作的《荀伯格/爵士樂》(2011)讓爵士樂和古典音樂背景的樂手都可以即興演奏。在意大利Soundscape Festival首演的《即興曲II》(2011),由中音長笛配合即時互動的電子音樂,以圖像記譜容許樂手即興。最近的裝置藝術《遊樂場》(2011)則在探索以視訊攝錄人體的動作來觸發聲音在空間裏移動。

李氏亦喜歡為劇場及舞蹈創作音樂,最近期的音樂劇有由英華女校同學演出的《愛麗斯》(2010)和由拔萃女書院同學演出的《拔萃女孩》(2005)。他亦曾和利茲的北英格蘭現代舞學院(NSCD)的同學合作,為兩首舞蹈小品創作音樂(2009,2012)。他亦曾在約克大學校內的音樂劇和舞台劇表演中擔任指揮、音效設計及演奏二胡等等。
