The lyrics of this song is adapted from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Scene 5. It is Romeo and Juliet’s last and only night together. Juliet, fearing for not seeing Romeo again, is afraid of his departure. Romeo must leave Verona before the next day comes or else he would be captured and killed by the Prince’s men. Juliet tries to persuade Romeo that the birdcalls they hear are from the nightingale, not the lark which sings in the daybreak. To Romeo, daylight is a messenger from the death, “More light and light, more dark and dark our woes”. In this music adaptation, the singers represent the lovers in the play, while the guitar reveals the environment and their inner feelings. This piece was premiered by Jovita Leung, soprano; David Quah, tenor and Stephen Chau, guitar in New Generation 2005 organized by HKCG and RTHK Radio 4.
